In August 2000, four American climbers in Kyrgyzstan were taken hostage by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. While marching north, the rebels were surrounded by the Kyrgyz military and a firefight ensued.
On the run again, the hostages waited for a chance to turn the tables on the remaining captors. On a rocky mountain, they made a deadly decision to gain freedom-a decision that haunts them yet. The four climbers--Beth Rodden, Tommy Caldwell, John Dickey, and Jason Smith--recount their ordeal.
